Plump Nelly – Giltspur Street
Giltspur Street · Samuel Roper, who died in gaol before trial
Giltspur Street still runs from Newgate Street up to West Smithfield, past the old site of Newgate gaol. Here Samuel Roper, known as Plump Nelly, was prosecuted in 1726 for "keeping a disorderly House". He never came to trial: he died in prison that December. Not every keeper reached the gallows or the pillory – some simply died in the gaols that the raids kept full.
