Siegfried Sassoon
23 Campden Hill Square · war poet
Siegfried Sassoon won the Military Cross and then, in 1917, publicly declared his opposition to the First World War – an act of extraordinary courage. His scalding war poems, and later his memoirs, fixed the conflict in the national memory.
In the years of peace he had relationships with men including the composer Ivor Novello and the aesthete Stephen Tennant. He lived at 23 Campden Hill Square in Holland Park. English Heritage’s blue plaque marks the house.
