Vita Sackville-West & Harold Nicolson
182 Ebury Street · an open marriage, and Vita and Virginia
Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson – writers, and later the creators of the garden at Sissinghurst – had one of the most famously open marriages of the twentieth century. Both loved people of their own sex throughout their lives, and their devotion to each other survived it all.
Vita’s passionate affair with Virginia Woolf inspired Woolf’s novel Orlando, written as a kind of love letter. The couple lived at 182 Ebury Street in Belgravia. English Heritage’s blue plaque is here.
