Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson
11 Edwardes Square · the humanist who named the League of Nations
Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson was a Cambridge political philosopher and pacifist who, in 1914, coined the phrase ‘League of Nations’ for the body he hoped would end war. A friend of the Bloomsbury circle, he was known to all as ‘Goldie’.
He wrote with unusual candour about his own homosexuality in a memoir not published until long after his death. He lived at 11 Edwardes Square in Kensington. English Heritage’s blue plaque is here.
