Vanessa Bell & Duncan Grant
46 Gordon Square · the Bloomsbury Group’s open household
The painters Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant were at the centre of the Bloomsbury Group, and 46 Gordon Square was its first London home. Bell, Virginia Woolf’s sister, and Grant, who loved both men and women, lived and worked together for decades in an openly unconventional household, most famously at Charleston in Sussex.
Theirs was a love affair, a lifelong friendship and an artistic partnership all at once. English Heritage’s blue plaque honours them both here.
