Bar Code – Archer Street

A different register of Soho

Bar Code on Archer Street was Soho’s leather and bear bar – a different register from the bright Wardour Street scene. In the tradition of Earl’s Court’s Coleherne but smaller and more central, it served a clientele who wanted something more specific: darker corners, more attitude, a dress code that admitted leather and denim. It closed around 2015 as Soho’s venue stock contracted sharply.

One street over is Kairos, the LGBT+ wellbeing and counselling charity now called Centred, which has supported the community’s mental health from Archer Street since 1997. Not every gay bar wanted to be friendly; Bar Code had a type, and the type knew where to find it. One street away, a charity had been quietly doing the other, equally vital work. Both mattered.
